The Idea Girl - Gas From Trash To Power Homes - The Methane Way
Quotes from Leigh Dethman Deseret Morning from BNet
“Trash is coming in handy: More than 2,500 Murray homes will be powered by electricity churned from methane gas naturally created by garbage at the county landfill.”
“U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials joined local leaders Wednesday at the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility, 6030 W. California Ave., for an official ribbon-cutting for the project that will use landfill methane to generate electricity. ”“Utilizing the methane gas created by a landfill is an effective means of reducing overall greenhouse-gas emissions,” Corroon said at the ribbon-cutting. “The key to these projects is that they utilize an otherwise wasted fuel source and displace the use of other fuel sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear energy.”We have found a way to take our trash that is already buried and create energy from it. The funny thing about it is that we buy groceries, dispose of the wrappings, the garbage is shipped away from our homes and deposited in some land, then it’s recycled and we pay to use the hydro from our previously purchased garbage? Shouldn’t our hydro rates be cheaper instead of more expensive since we are supplying the main ingredient in this process? Probably not, it takes lots of money to do the process and we are paying for our garbage to be removed. It’s a strange way of looking at it though isnt it? It seems that everything we do we pay for in the end. How we treat our environment - we will pay for it in the end. What we feed our bodies - we will pay for it in the end. Whether or not we exercise - we will pay for it in the end. It’s not only the environment that has its consequences, its in how we live our lives everyday, every hour and every minute. Take some time to day to be thankful for the things that you have and do something good for yourself, others and our environment. I know your busy and so many other things to think about but really this earth is the only place we can live for now. Unless they discover another inhabitable planet (so far we haven’t). The fact is we will all pay for what we do. What we sow, we will reap. It could be a good thing or a bad thing, it all depends on what YOU decide to do!
